3-color Cross Dab Background with Studio Paint3-color Cross Dab Background with Studio Paint

Author : Stacey Dunning

Studio Paint is a neat acrylic paint for use on canvas.  It can be used straight, mixed with mediums to create glazes or with water to create watercolors or less opaque paint.  To create this background I started by choosing 3 complementary colors from the Studio paint line: dab of yellow, modern red and sable brown.  I put a little of each on a palette and then mixed the red and brown, mixed the yellow and brown and mixed the red and yellow, creating a multi-colored palette to dip my brush into.  Using a wide flat bruh I kept picking up color from different areas and changing the direction of brush stroke (see the partially completed sample sitting near the palette in figure 3a).  I simply continued this, changing the color and direction of stroke from lengthwise to horizontal and back until the canvas was covered (figure 3b).  For a more subtle background I continued with a wash of watered-down traditional tan Studio Paint which is optional (figure 3c).
