SHELLAC BONDED MICA TILES & COMPRESSED MICA
Peel apart for thinner, more transparent mica

Magical Mica
If you're looking for more great ideas for using mica tiles, we just received a new book with tons of creative ideas ranging from simple to complex.

mica tile samplemica tilesThe center piece on the card to the left is covered with a layer of mica peeled off one of the tiles. You can get 4-8 layers of mica from one tile. After peeling it until the desired thickness, it was cut using a paper cutter and run through a Xyron machine to adhere over the stamped image.

On the tag to the right, a thinner layer of this mica was used to create the window pane behind the cut out window frame. It was stamped with a handwriting stamp using clear embossing ink and embossed using black embossing powder and a heat gun. The colored panels were created using the new colors of sharpie markers to give the illusion of vintage stained glass.

Embossing Tiles are compressed layers of mica. They can be delaminated, increasing the quantity by many times! Pressed flowers, pictures, photos and stamps can be sandwiched in between the delaminated layers, which can then be re-adhered using red liner tape, or Perfect Paper Adhesive-Gloss. The largest size is more of a dark greenish brown while the three smaller sizes and the shapes are definitely more of a warm brown color.

Rubber Stamping Basics

Some of the tiles are shellac bonded, meaning the layers of thin mica are held together with shellac. Shellac can be melted slightly with heat so by heating these tiles you can actually bend them a little to wrap around jars or candle holders. You can also peel apart the layers of this mica, exposing more shiny, inside layers.

The compressed mica cannot be bent that way and are more clear. Thinner layers are almost completely transparent.
